LOTOJA Training Ride - Sat 8/18

I need to get some good, long miles in on Saturday to cram for LOTOJA. I'm thinking of a 5 AM departure and doing bogus to the upper lodge, then down and over to Horseshoe Bend and back. Probably just over 100 miles with some good climbing. I'd like to be back before 11:00.

Who's in?

FYI

I think the Bogus Hill Climb is Saturday so you may want to do another route.

It is

Yeah, it is. But with that early of a start you'll be up and back down again before the big crowd even takes off...

Alternative

For those that don't want to roll at 5:00, we could meet at the Chevron on the corner of hwy 55 and Beacon Light a mile before Shadow Valley at 8ish and do the Horseshoe Bend portion together.

5am with alternate 6 am start??

Here's a thought: there could be two starts, one at 5 and we can loop back to pick up some riders for 6am or even 6:30. I think we should do at least 100; I was hoping for about 120.

I thought we could maybe start with the cartwright loop. I don't think that riding some of Bogus would be out, but we would have to take a look at it. Then we could hit some other climbs like tablerock (can you keep riding up that private road??), then up to hilltop/arrowrock. From there we could go back past the prison and out south where we rarely go, toward Kuna and Melba. It would be easy to get the miles, they would be mixed, and we can cut back whenever we need to get back. Something different.

I am up for any good ideas, but I would like to include some climbing on at least half of the ride.

This ride is sounding interesting to me

I'm not crazy about the early start (6:30 and some natural light appeals to me) but I may have to do it to get in enough time tomorrow. I would like to mix it up a bit more. The Arrowrock part sounds fun, I haven't been there for a while.

Wherever

I'm glad to mix up the route. I'd like to be on the bike from 5 to 11. I'll ride wherever during that time.

Just so you know... I'm planning to dial back my effort for the first ~75 to see how I feel and gauge how long I think I can last. I was feeling toasted last week after 80 as I went too hard too soon.

dialing back--

That would be a good idea, good plan. I do think it is ok to be toasted at the end--it teaches your legs a lesson. Ladd's power meter would be great to have to help guage effort; I just watch my heartrate since I know my zones quite well.

That being said, I've heard you say this before, so maybe we should just stick you in the back for awhile to force it upon you. Usually you say this and then I've got my heartrate pegged just to stay with you ;)

Finalized Plan

Looks like we are starting at 5am from my house with Matt, Ladd, Steve, and myself. We will pick up Tom at 6:30 at his house so we can drop off our lights etc.
