CX State Champs

Just so you don't all have to hold your breath very long in suspense -- I'm not the newest state champ. There, that's out of the way... :)

Best course ever set at Sandy Point. They opened up the course and it just had a really fun feel to it. I got a random call-up to the front row to start. Me and the fast guys - ha! Don't worry, the whole first lap I was getting passed by everyone who should have been ahead of me. The first time through the long sand section I felt great but right at the exit a guy swerved right in front of me. I not only flipped off my bike (but pretty much landed on my feet, so not a huge deal) but that ended up messing up Rob and Harris. At least coming out of the sand we were all in a pack, so I thought that was cool. But then I couldn't hold the pace and they were off...

For the next lap I was settling into the pass/get-passed mode with a few guys and that was fun. I had just tried to get ahead of a group and then near the beer tent I was pedaling through a corner and jammed a pedal and went down! Totally my own fault, but no real damage done.

Towards the end of the race I was trading places with the most popular guy in the race. I'd get ahead of him somewhere along the course, and then he'd bunny hop the barrier ahead of the short sand section and ride it, making up a lot of time! Huge cheers and lots of photos whenever we hit that section, so I'll be in a lot of photos as 'the other guy who can't bunny hop' :)

It was long and hard, and I haven't been riding or really preparing, but I'm really glad I made it out there -- it was great!

ALSO - besides the beer tent and live music, they had the Boise Fry Company truck out there serving food. Great stuff!

Awesome!

It was fun watching you race. Very, very cool! It was an hour though, right?

not only that - it was a LONG hour!

Soon I could race in the 45+ category, I think they usually go 40 minutes. Getting old never sounded so good...

One other thing embarrassing thing I forgot to mention:
The crazy slick off-camber corner owned me. I took 4 attempts at it before the race - and crashed on the first 3! Talk about a mental challenge! I ended up taking so much air out of my tires that I'm sure I gave up a lot on the fast sections, but I got a nice soft ride :) Anyway, I took it really carefully during the race, and still got stuck at the very end of the fencing on the 2nd to last lap. Good times...
